Case Study

Blackwall tunnel

The refurbishment of the Blackwall Tunnel involved the replacement of the original outdated and inadequate ventilation system. The replacement scheme required the installation of four 8.5m diameter automatic ventilators. Each ventilator was powered by four 1250mm diameter extract fans and the ventilator blades so large they had to each had to be linked to a geared system powered by large three phase motors. The automatic ventilators are believed to be the largest “AOV’s ever built.
